Journey into Mabon's Magic
Equinox is upon us. It will be exact on September 22 at 6:55pm PDT when the Sun moves into Libra, the sign of balance and harmony. Day and night will be equal, harmonizing light and dark and enhancing that liminal non-dual space betwixt and between!
In the Mabon transmission, we work with bhudi mudra for equilibrium of the body’s fluid systems. We also journey to a sacred apple orchard and slice open the magic hidden at the core of our everyday lives.
The Fall Equinox - Mabon - is the second of three holy days celebrating the harvest (the first is Lughnasadh and the final is Samhain). At Mabon, we celebrate the harvest of fruits, particularly apple and pomegranate.
Pomegranate is the fruit of the Underworld, used to entice us into a mystical space beneath the over-cultured mind. One tiny bejeweled seed marries one to the Otherworld.
Apple is one of the most common yet magical fruits - the fruit of knowledge, wisdom, magic. It is associated with the Isle of Avalon. (One interesting yet little known tidbit: The name Avalon comes from the Welsh Afallach, the god of the Otherworld who is mentioned in Welsh triads and other early sources.) Apple is said to possibly originate at leas 6,000 years ago in the land that is currently Kazakhstan - from a goddess-worshiping agricultural society.
Slice the apple in half horizontally and reveal the 5-pointed star, representing the 5 elements of Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Ether. One form of apple divination is counting the seeds in this 5-pointed star. Count the number of visible seeds. Then, look deeper into the symbology and numerology associated with those seeds. Find your answer there.
Let Day be bounded by the Night,
Dark be balanced by the Light,
Earth and Sky and Sun and Sea,
A circled cross shall ever be.
- Diana L. Paxton, Ancestors of Avalon
Pause during this sacred pause when all is held in a moment of perfect balance. Find peace in the betwixt and between. Peace for you. Peace for all.
Equinox Blessings!
